The FAB&PP Poem of the Month for September 2010


A PLANNED EVENT

he wakes
               to the
near
absolute
            stillness of
a downed power
grid

deep
post-midnight
silence
          in the sky
only
the urban bleed
from a couple
blocks away

in the house
a few
        batteries
complain of
being drained

he paddles around
with his torch
to reassure
     himself

and when
               the power
comes back on
a dog barks in
the next yard

oppressed no
doubt by
the motors and
transformers
                   the buzz
of normal

the clocks
glow again
