The FAB&PP Poem of the Month for September 2005

my cat
sits tall in
the kitchen
staring hard
through the
screen door

an
indoor cat

accustomed now
at our summer house
to a few
minutes a day
sitting with me
on the deck
or pushing through
the weeds in the
yard spotting
birds
        and butterflies
while i follow
and play the
sheepdog

she rides down
uncomfortably
in a plastic
box
        slow to
make
         the
connection
between
              the
drive
and destination

but griping less
these last
               few
trips

the
cape cod air
the neighbor’s house
empty now
[an old man who
seldom spoke and
now never will]

his friend
my other
neighbor
believes they’re
cleaning it up
for the nieces
and nephews
                     [and
inevitable
               realtors]

my cat and i will
sit with
each other
a while
           and
watch
and wait

as the air
and the sky
and summer
weekend
               pass

until the long
drive home
