the tunnel jackers
freeze the ground

before them
the steam rising into
the late winter
air
    from the ice
plants

    imported from
    freezewall
    in rockaway

ziengenfuss'
drilling truck parked
at the headwall
as the jacks propel
the boxed roadway
ahead
    into the
earth

the coolant pumps
humming
a note above the
commuter deisel
rumble

their blue/black pipes
threading the tracks
like pythons

with icy mantles
where they bend into
the ballast

on the way below
