The FAB&PP Poem of the Month for February 1999

pen poised motionless
(a narration)

pen poised
motionless

for no man
paralyzed by
habitual
contempt
habitually
renewed in
observation

contemplation
of the reality of
the world
dismissed as
mundane
or incompetent

but simply
outside
the tightening
inner sphere
of paradise
constructed by

dainty
feigned refinement
and careful avoidance
detached delicacy

and cultured
imagination of
the unrealized

glimpsed now
and then

with bemused
awareness of
absent
connection
and phony
wisdom

pencil poised
to pass the time

careful avoidance

the sound of the words

[the steel drums
in the subway play
santa clause
is coming to
town]

translucent pillow
darting between
dreams of flight
and soliloquy
