The FAB&PP Poem of the Month for August 1998

parked on
the Williamsburg
bridge the subway
train rattles
down beside
us
    slowing
with the traffic

fire on the
track
        red
fire truck parked
in our lane
            dousing

we all stop for
flame - but finally the
subway

descends on its way
and we drive
on ours
toward the
Holland tunnel

silent

the radio on
antique soft
pop
as we
go
haltingly now
            glancing
through soho
